When do we talk about traumatic experiences?
Traumas can be traced back to events or sequences of events that have been experienced in the first person, that have been reported to us or of which we have become aware, which represent a stress of extreme gravity and threaten the integrity and continuity of one’s own life.
Some of the events recognized as potential traumatic experiences are: sexual violence, abuse, psychological violence, physical attack, kidnapping, injury, torture, incarceration, war, natural or caused disasters, accidents, illnesses, etc … but also more simply separations .
I have had an interest in traumatic experiences since my early college years, when I wrote my first thesis on trauma caused by environmental disasters and migration.
